MTC Instruction: Song Laoshi On Missionary Potential

Song Laoshi

MTC Provo

19 February 2009

See a lot of potential and wants to bring that out. Plan of Salvation gives a peace and a goal.

We are in God's household.

  • He knew our strengths and weaknesses.
  • Wanted us to have everything he has.
  • God's face will be familiar to use when veil is lifted. We choose to obey him.
Not teach investigators new stuff but bringing it to their remembrance. Abraham 3:24-25.

Our calling as missionaries most sacred part of the plan of salvation..entrusted with God's souls.

We get sidetracked thinking about ourselves but this is the Lord's work.

Unfocusedness melts away as you think about investigators.

Your time is the Lord's time.

Bruce R. McConkie "Selected as personal representative of Jesus Christ." This is what Jesus Christ wants you to be here in this district in this room in this minute.

Start keeping goals and making them i.e. SYling, paying attention in class.

Stop wasting time, losing focus in class.

Start encouraging others to do better and lifting their confidences.

Stop being so focused on me. Let go. This is the Lord's work, I've wanted to do this since I can remember, so it's time to do it right and lose myself in the work. Don't lose who I am but lose my worldly focuses.

Wants to reiterate urgency.

Do we fully comprehend the urgency?

Urgency hasn't set in this class. Urgent calling for immediate action or attention.

Do we feel the urgency in this work like an apostle that said if he could go back, knock on every door and then when he collapsed he would lay and yell the gospel. That's how urgent it is!!

Everything needs to be done with a sense of the importance of the gospel.

Pray for Mission ALREADY, so you get attached and realize people will depend on us.

Our mission has started.

You have great expectations like Pip in Dicken's Great Expectations, except you know your benefactor, God.

Pip thought he was doomed to failure.

Pip blows it at first.

  • If a man lacks wisdom, can't just say "it's over nature" we need to pray to God to give it to us.
  • Past is behind, learn from it.
  • What we live in now is a gift, that's why we call it the present. At times all of us let self-doubt wreck our lives. Enemy screams "Too little, Can't Do It." But we need to realize you are in image of God.
  • When you feel alone, remember who you are.
  • Live bold. Bold & Overbearing. Be Bold.
  • There are games we finish last, but goal is to rise above it. Shows are ability to overcome and proves determination.

MTC Instruction: Power and Authority

Han Laoshi

MTC Provo

18 February 2009

You are one in a couple million. You are unique.

Missionary badge is put over your heart.

Will receive guidance as you are worthy.

Ordinances of salvation: baptism, confirmation, endowment, etc.

Can't have necessary without power of the Godhead.

Are we talking about the world in our conversations instead of about God.

Are we contentious?

Are we listening to worldly music?

Impure thoughts.

Ingratitude, negatvity.

Pessimism

Unfocused. Unprepared, Unclean. Wasting time.

Jesus is on the back of our soul. He's clean but if we mess up our soul, people see dirt, not the Savior.

We speak for God every day of our lives!

You have Christ on your chest and in your hearts.

Power so great, you have no idea what you even have!

Are you willing to change?
  • Covenant with God.
  • Don't point fingers at each other, point at yourself.
  • If doing negative things on above list heed and stop.
You are in the moment. You are set apart from world.

Be an example of the believers.

  • Han Laosi passionate for a reason.
  • Without power, you can't be like you should be, when you understand the power and authority takes care of the smaller things.
We are in a hurry to find God's children. (M. Russell Ballard)

Every time you improve.

Train your mind.

Repent, you are fighting for your investigators.

Time is short! It's gone for him? Not for us.

Jacob worked for 7 years but seemed but a small moment because love for wife. Our mission but a small moment, seem like it if we love the people.

Get Jeremiah's fire and you can do anything.

Seen missionaries live and missionaries die. Sad when they die.

Path on being best ever been.

Remember your calling. 3 Nephi: 12-13. Memorize vs. 13.

Remember who you are, disciples of Christ.

Write down, power and authority what means to you. Find time.

D&C 29:7; John 15:16; D&C93:15; 52:9; 49:1-4; 88:77-78.

Try to remember Savior.

MTC Devotional: Beware of Anyone Who Says You Won't Baptize

M. Russell Ballard of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles

MTC Provo

17 February 2009

Newspapers ask "Why are you perceived as not being Christians?" Response: We don't understand that. Church named after Christ. Their belief can from our disbelief in Nicene Creed.

We believe we are spirit children.

They don't believe we are Christians because:

  • We bear testimony that God and his Son appeared to Joseph Smith and they spoke to him.
  • People don't know who God is
Reality is clear to our primary chldren. Sad world doesn't know who Heavenly Father, Jesus
Christ and Holy Ghost.

53,000 men and women are trying to teach gospel.

129 temples.

World thinks we are secret closed society because temples are closed.

Apostles inviting media to go through temple to show we aren't a secret society.

People really are in spiritual darkness.

Missionaries need become Lesson 3 master. You will be successful. Maintain a positive attitude.
Absolutely essential to success. People's first impression will be you of Heavenly Father, Jesus Christ and Holy Ghost.

Converting people is what they feel not know.

This is His Church.

I FEEL converts people. You have to believe all of the time and trust in Jesus Christ.

Counsel: Beware of anybody who says you won't baptize a lot. Don't believe that. If you allow that Satan gets you. You can find, teach, and baptize everywhere you are going.

If you internalize message of restoration and everything especially at MTC and PMG. Treasure up and learn how to present the gospel.

Own it...so you can know you can teach any principle at any time to any situation.

Be master teachers so I could throw any one of you to Washington Post and let you answer questions.

There are people who will respond to our message.

You will make a lot of friend. You will sow a lot of seeds, but don't let it get into your mind that you are here for any other reason than the work.

Believe trust in the Lord.

Moroni whoso believe doubting nothing, granted.

Preach to every creature to believe in Christ name Despair and wonder not. Mormon 9

Alma 29 Wants to be angel. Vs 91 I know that which Lord commandeth Glory in? His is my joy glory in God.

Keep upbeat attitude.

We are in a hurry to find Father's children.

Thanks for willingness to accept calls. Thanks parents/family/bishop.

12 send us forth as ambassadors...with testimony burning in our hearts. He'll be as close as we allow him.

May parents and siblings be blessed.

May heavens inspire, enlighten and bless us.

Greatest opportunity in your life to be servants and declare his message. May fire of testimony burn in your bones.

MTC Zone Conference: Older Missionaries Advice

Zone Conference

MTC Provo

16 February 2009

Moroni 7:33 Faith=power to do things in expedient in him

Use language of faith and don't doubt.

Elder Goodard: Proverbs 29:18 no vision perish.. keep the law

When you have a vision, will come true.

Be yourself. Even if it seems weird.

Elder Ryan Christensen: Listen to the Spirit. Don't memorize tall book sentences. Listen for what God wants you to share. Listen to the teachers they know what's up. Learn vocabulary from PMG.

Elder David Moes: "I have power to make the climate." You are a tool in the hands of
God. Remember that when tired. Focus on Spiritual Fire. Here's my heart. Hope can have some binding experiences in district.

Elder Porter: Wish had testimony of SYL sooner...helps you and others. Glad for relationships with everyone. Be TIGHT with companion. If you can love them, love everyone. Strengthen relationships.

Sister Tedjamulia: When committed to SYL, feel the Lord helping you. Joseph Smith is Prophet of God. Need to have testimony of what you are teaching investigators.

Elder Roessler: 2 Nephi 22:2 God is salvation. Trust and not be afraid. We can do this as long as we trust in the Lord. Have faith from beginning. Inspire your faith.

Elder Rich DeBrujn: You can do it..if you have faith all the time. But with faith we can with the Lord. SYL just have to do it even though doesn't work sometimes.

Elder Boshard: SYL...just do it. You are on your mission now. Your mission is to speak Chinese. People who speak English have crutch. Now is the time to prepare to get there! No crutch in Taiwan. Smile! Smiling makes you happy! People will see that.

Elder Wu: 3 Nephi 11; D&C 123:17 Cheerfully in all things. Sometimes feels bad for doing best. He wants us to work hardest, then trust in Him.

Elder Thorup: SYL and Heavenly Father will loosen your tongue in Chinese. The only thing keeping us is yourself. Build up relationships with companion, teachers, and district. Mosiah 3:19 Willing to submit to things Lord puts on you. Let go of pride. Don't let pride get in the way.

Elder Blackham: Alma 26:27 When about to turn back, Lord said go bear with patience. Go depressed...but when came across script, made him turn around. Can't do it by ourselves. But we aren't. It's not an if, it's a when. Man pushing rock, won't budge. Finally asks Father for help. Lord told him "Look how tough you've become. But then Father moved. It was through growth that he will for us if we do best. It's enough.

Elder Teshima: Elder Holland said "mission are Forever. You have to work with your companion. Tell companion you love him. Get them to commit or its pointless. Ask God to help you commit to Yourself! There is going to be hard times everyone has them. Pray for help on SYL. Chinese is hard for everyone.

Elder Lee: 2 Nephi 4 Someday someone says something means world to you. Personal study is important. Teach from scriptures or you'll say things aren't true.

Elder Weinberger: You are inadequate. That's why you need the Lord. Let go of yourself. Not the easiest thing to do, but if you do it,, what greater gift than bring family eternal life. You are going to change people's lives. Stop thinking this is hard. Think of lives you will change. Stop thinking of self.

Sister Chu: You'll never understand what I feel when you guys speak Chinese. Please SYL. I am a convert. Missionaries taught me the gospel. I wish I had Chinese experience.

Brother Hodges (The Power to Change)

We know we need to do all these things, but how are we going to change. Through the Atonement. One gift=Agency. You have a decision to choose to let Lord change you, or you can forget. Not going to be easy. Satan tries to make you have doubt. Satan wants to use your time. Fear can replace faith if you let it.

Old missionaries don't know you. Next Wednesday will be a new opportunity. Companions let each other change. In companion planning talk and decide to change. Take it to pray then come and discuss with teachers. Build up relationships.

Missionary Letters--Goodbye, Alice in Wonderland

Monday, February 16, 2009 9:19 AM

Nihao,

And welcome to another Preparation day at the MTC. The first of the "older" districts of missionaries are leaving today. One missionary going to Hong Kong mandarin speaking, and an Elder from France, going to France Mandarin speaking. He's excited to go back. His hometown is actually IN his mission. So that should be interesting. I think he misses france a lot. But anyways...

First of all I want to thank everyone for the Valentine's stuff. It was fun. One piece of advice I learned from Gen and Gigi's missions though is that in the post office they have flat rate shipping boxes, that would have saved you guys quite a bit I'm pretty sure. Especially once it's going to a foreign country. That's just what I think though, i'm not sure. Rexburg is closer than SC so that might be why sending them something to the MTC was cheaper. Much appreciated. Although you guys are ALL slackers, there was no new email when I checked today. And I didn't get anything this week but the packages. Haha, but I guess that's acceptable. Um, Gen thanks a lot for the stockings I asked for!! That's what I needed the most...and the hot cheetos. I was like sad when the other package didn't have any, but I ended up getting some, so life is wonderful. Haha.

This week has been interesting to say in the least. Monday night my nose started bleeding and my body was shaking. It was pretty awful stuff. My whole district ended up coming down with this fevery cold. I felt bad for our teachers Tuesday and Wednesday because we all just were barely staying awake...we just stared at them during class...like ehhhhh. But at the MTC, if one person gets sick, it's everyone...at least in your district, and it slowly filters to others in the zone. Pretty sure we got a couple guys sick. Haha...but what can you do.

Um, this week at the TA, we got a real investigator. It was NERVE wracking. Seriously. Especially since the older missionaries that had to teach straight Chinese had gone right before us and totally confused her. And she's our teachers tutor at school in chinese. Sufficeth it to say that she definitely needs to hear the gospel in her tongue like the D&C scripture. But the time for Chinese lessons for us was not yet. Our teacher was like "I'm excited for you guys to teach, this is my tutor, she's not a member" Sister Ackerson and I were SO nervous. In the 15 minute chinese scenario beforehand, we talked Chinglish because she really wanted to understand what was happening and wanted us to explain stuff to her...so anything we ting bu dong'ed in Zhongwen, she told us in English. We found out she believed in God and Jesus, but didnt believe in afterlife? So we went in and prepared for our English scenario...which was no longer a scenario, it was a true lesson. So, when we got in there she asked us to speak REALLY slow English because she had a hard time understanding English. We tried our best. She had a Chinese book of mormon to follow with us, but no doctrine and covenants or bible. Next week, in case we get her, I will bring mine. At one point she read in English and confused thee and three. My companion and I were blessed to know just enough chinese to explain some simple concepts. I explained thee is to you like in chinese nin is to ni. One is just a lot more formal, and so they use formal in the bible. Her question she was confused by was that she understood that christ suffered, but she didn't understand how it affected her in her life. Our objective the whole lesson was to get her to understand shuzui (the atonement). And we did a great job because by the end, she had this CLICK go off in her head and she was like OH, we can't do it alone because we sin and he didn't! It was the most awesome feeling ever to know that was a TRUE knowledge she had just gained. Sister Manning, one of the Chinese Teaching Evaluation teachers watched us and only gave good feedback. She thanked us for the comfort Jane felt and everything...and we later found out sister manning is her roommate and they met at conference. They've been living together this last month...so if she was comfortable, sister manning her friend should be able to tell. She told us she wanted to talk to us again next week, so there is a good chance we could teach her again. She's so sweet. It's just confusing. She says she loves the feelings she gets when she prays and yet she believes in nothing after life? But I think it will all slowly come together for her, with all her LDS friends loving her and encouraging her, not to mention she LOVES coming to the TA every week to help us with our scenarios. She's a really great investigator.

Okay, I have 10 minutes left, so that's all i have time for so i can check this later.

See ya next week

Fu jiemei.

P.S. I need stuart and michael's emails I don't have them on my list...and Aunt Allison's address. Thanks.

MTC Instruction: Adjust Your Teaching to Meet Needs

Every person is different so be sensitive to their circumstances.

Adapt to needs and questions.

Sometimes if you answer one's question is successful lesson.

Be sensitive to amount of new information.

Answer questions and ask questions.

D&C 50:10-16

23--Edification at the point your investigator gets lost...are they being edified? The second you lose the investigator you've lost the Spirit and the only way to get it back is vs. 22 when understand together.

26--Appointment to be the greatest.

D&C 42:12-17

Elders teach principles from books.

Elders:

Hearken

D&C 36:7;41:2;42:1-16;93;44;50;53:3;68:8-12;133:8.

43:15 Elders not sent to be taught, but to teach by the spirit.

If you are not teaching to needs, the spirit will be present in everyone's hearts that reside there.

Activity

1. I don't believe in afterlife. After death there is nothing. But I like the feelings I get from praying. This week some missionary taught me about the Atonement. In understand what happened but I'm not sure how his pain helps me?

2. My friend told me that families are happy in the gospel. He asked me to pray about it. Why should I pray to air? How do I know some divine being he speaks of will answer? How would praying help me strengthen my family?

3. Why doesn't my first baptism matter?

4. Why would God let this happen to me if he loved me?

2 Nephi 2; Alma 14:9-11; 60:13.

Matthew 4:18-20 If the Savior stood beside me what would I do.

They straightway left their nets, did we straightway get ready to serve.

Leave behind distractions. Follow the Savior. Have we left everything behind? Do not look back!

Look to the Savior your entire mission. Not behind.

PMG pg. 122 Obedience may be required to do things you don't understand. Will become stronger missionary if obey. How much do we love the Lord? How much do we want to be obedient and follow his will.

Greater obedience=greater confidence.

Develop characteristics of Chirst

PMG has so many strengths and aspects to give us direction. 2 Peter 1=divine attribute of Jesus Christ

Virtue has power of personal purity. You become weakened when you have purity in others, leaves you, goes to them. D&C 93:20.

As we focus in Christ fear will leave and faith will develop.

Disobedience takes away light and truth.

That which is of God is light.
